Regenerative Medicine

Though great progress has been made in medicine, current treatments are increasingly unable to keep pace with patients’ needs, particularly in the case of our aging population. There are few effective ways to treat the fundamental causes of many diseases and injuries. In many cases, clinicians can only manage patients’ symptoms using medications or devices. It is no secret that increased opioid abuse and misuse has been a direct consequence of medicine’s focus on treating pain symptoms rather than their causes. However, in the case of pain management, modern medicine is finally breaking through with regenerative medicine.  Rather than dealing with pain from arthritis and soft tissue injuries solely with treatments designed to mask pain, new advancements are working on actually repairing the tissue damage.

Regenerative medicine is an exciting topic in medicine due to its potential to fully heal damaged tissues and organs, offering solutions and hope for people who have conditions that today are beyond repair. Regenerative medicine involves delivering specific types of cells or cell products to diseased tissues or organs, where they will ultimately restore tissue and organ function. At Valley Center for Cannabis Therapy, we utilize amniotic fluid derived stem cells to achieve these results.

Stem cells are the most basic cells living in the human body. Their beauty is found in their ability to become many types of cells, from skin cells to muscle, from bone to cartilage. Amniotic stem cells are derived from amniotic fluid obtained during scheduled caesarean sections from consenting donors. Amniotic fluid surrounds the fetus during pregnancy, feeding it. Normally, this fluid is discarded following caesarean section. However, it can now be harvested and used to help others due to the many helpful factors it contains.

Researchers have discovered that the amniotic fluid has an extremely high concentration of stem cells, even more than bone marrow in adults. When processed at an FDA regulated lab, the biologic material ends up containing significant regenerative properties, such as growth factors, hyaluronic acid and stem cell activators. Amazingly, amniotic fluid is also immunopriviliged, so it does not create a rejection reaction when injected into a patient. Additionally, amniotic fluid has anti-microbial and anti-adhesion properties, meaning there is less chance of infection and/or scarring when it is used to treat injuries.

The application of this novel therapy has had implications in many areas of medicine. Perhaps the most notable arena has been in professional sports, where athletes such as Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods have taken advantage of these treatments to enhance healing after injuries. But regenerative medicine is not just useful in treating sports injuries. It is useful in many other conditions, such as degenerative arthritis, degenerative disc disease, multiple soft tissue injuries, non-healing wounds, crush injuries, fracture healing, limb salvage, and even in cosmetics/plastics.
